There’s magic in being a beginner again, especially when you do it alongside your wife and/or kids. Learning something new together—whether it’s playing chess, paddleboarding, learning guitar—levels the playing field and creates an incredible shared experience. As men, we’re so used to being the “expert” in the room with our kids or the tough, experienced guy with our wives. But when you’re both starting fresh, it shows that it’s okay to suck at stuff, to start new and to make fun of yourself as you age.
Your family doesn’t need you to be perfect; they need you to be present. When you’re both learning, you’re building more than skills—you’re building memories. You’re also modeling lifelong curiosity, which is a lesson they’ll carry forever.
