I first came across Matty Christopherson while prepping for my appearance on The Great Unlearn with Cal Callahan. I was scrolling through past episodes, doing my homework, when I landed on Cal’s conversation with Matty. I didn’t know him at the time, but something about the title and the subject matter pulled me in. I hit play—and didn’t stop listening until I pulled into Austin. His story, his energy, his vulnerability, his presence… it all hit.
After that, I followed him on Instagram, checked out his site, learned more about his company Opscotch, and started paying attention to how he was showing up—physically, mentally, emotionally. A few weeks later, I was competing in HYROX in Houston. I was in the warm-up area talking to a few guys when I looked over and saw Matty on the bike. We locked eyes—you know that “we know each other from somewhere” kind of look. I said, “You look familiar.” He said, “You do too.” Within a minute, we figured it out—we’d both been on Cal’s podcast, listened to each other’s episodes, and followed one another ever since.
We talked, took a few photos, wished each other luck, and got on with the event.
A couple weeks later, I invited Matty to join one of our Midlife Male Inner Circle calls to share his story with the guys. He showed up fully—humble, thoughtful, direct—and now I’m proud to bring that same conversation to all of you.
So who is Matty Christopherson?
Matty’s a builder. He’s the co-founder of Opscotch, a health-first consumer company helping people lay stronger foundations for physical and mental well-being. But what really sets him apart isn’t just his business acumen—it’s his heart, his discipline, and his willingness to go all in when it matters most.
In 2023, Matty ran 125 kilometers from Vancouver to Whistler—an 18-hour effort with 1,900 meters of elevation along the Sea-to-Sky Highway. He called it Project 125: 90 days of training for 125 kilometers, all to support his friend, Olympian Krista Guloien Temple, in her fight against stage four cancer. He raised over $200,000 and galvanized a community through effort, intention, and love.
That’s the kind of man Matty is.
That’s what makes him a Midlife Male.
Let’s get into it.
On Belonging:
“Belonging always starts from within, and it’s not about impressing other people. It’s about really being at peace with yourself and really being in integrity with who you are.”
On Purpose:
“One of the biggest lessons that I have is this: Really know who you are and follow that purpose.”
On Authenticity:
“If you continue to put yourself out there on who you are without expectation, that’s the biggest thing, and not attach the outcome. Your tribe will find you.”
On Self-Love:
“If you love yourself, it doesn’t matter who loves you.”
On Resilience:
“You’re either running from something or running through something.”
On Success:
“Success for me is to continue to elevate this story, make an impact, inspire others. If I can constantly find myself in alignment for what I need and want and who I am, that’s what success looks like.”
On Integrity:
“Every time you make a commitment, whether that’s going to the gym, specific diet, not eating a dessert, you make a commitment to yourself. Every time you break a commitment, you erode your confidence. So stay integral with your word to others and yourself.”
On Vulnerability:
“You can be candid and vulnerable and be authentic. You can be vulnerable with your feelings, about where you came from and who you are, but you can still channel that masculine energy.”
On Relationships:
“Consistent actions can repair relationships in the long haul.”
On Asking for Help:
“Asking for help is one of my superpowers, and that’s what allowed us to raise $210,000 in a matter of months. There’s always this trepidation to ask for help, but it’s a common throughline with high performers.”
On Emotional Management:
“Remove the emotion out of the equation, and look at the bigger picture and see the big room, and then proceed forward, accepting the challenge for what it is.”
On Daily Practices:
“I prioritize my sleep more than ever. I stack my wins in the morning. 10 to 15 minutes of reading, I choose to read rather than journal. Prioritizing protein is really my anchor to my philosophy—Whole Foods and protein.”
On Doing Hard Things:
“When you choose to do hard things, you actually build a part of your brain, the capacity in your brain to be more resilient. Those micro decisions, those small wins, choosing to do that extra rep, it builds up that capacity.”
On Personal Growth:
“When you continue to choose personal growth and go up the elevator, you can see the world in a different way. There’s nothing wrong with being on a lower floor, but on higher floors, you see the world differently.”
On Perseverance:
“I found the courage, over the last four and a half years to continue to reach out, to reconcile my relationship with my identical twin brother, and it never came to fruition until five o’clock in the morning when he tapped me on the back of my shoulder during my run.”
