Picture this:

I’m standing in the ocean in Kauai, and I just wrapped three days of XPT training with a few hours before my flight. The last thing on my mind? A deep convo about “extreme ownership” with a stranger. But that’s exactly what happened.

I thought I was just saying hello to a guy next to me in the water—cool sunglasses, fit, tan, middle-aged. We weren’t old friends. No podcast swap planned. Just two midlife guys, standing in the ocean, wired the same way: curious, driven, working on ourselves. That’s how it usually happens. Not from a Rolodex. In the wild. And it sticks.

Nick was training for a half Ironman with his coach. I was there to reset. Five days of movement, nature, and space. Five minutes of conversation later, we’d covered mindset, accountability, and what it means to truly own your life. Then we exchanged numbers, Instagram handles and here we are.

Nick is 47. Single. Never married. No kids. Youngest of eight. His family is a kid factory—he’s the outlier. But he’s not the “I’m old, it’s too late” guy. He still wants the wife, the kids, the life. And he’s training for it. Not from ego. From purpose. From vision. That mindset flips everything.

He’s exceptionally fit, wildly successful in real estate, and relentlessly focused on leveling up. When guys like us cross paths, it’s because we’re both doing the work. That energy connects fast.

Nick told me something I’ll never forget:

“My ‘why’ isn’t abs. It’s being ready for my future wife and kids. In every workout, I picture a little girl running to me. That’s the fuel.”

Same for me. I lost my dad at 47. He lost his at 44. That number hits different. At 47, I had a choice—coast or go full throttle. I chose fuel. So did Nick. Different stories. Same mission.

Work Forever: The Lie That’s Breaking Men

A few days ago, I read a piece by Michael Clinton about how more people want to work longer—ditching retirement, staying professionally active into their 70s and beyond.

Now, I’ve got nothing but respect for Michael. Smart guy. Great book. I’ve featured him in Midlife Male (you can read our conversation here). He’s living his philosophy—and that works for him.

But I see it differently.

Here’s my take:

We are over-indexing on work—and it’s killing us.

Most men don’t want to work longer. They don’t have to. They’ve just been conditioned to believe they do.

We’ve built a culture where a man’s worth is measured by his job title, income, LinkedIn profile, and output. And the minute that slips—when age creeps in, or the market shifts—you’re replaceable. Forgotten. Done.

And it’s not just business. It’s personal.

Let me show you:

  • Men aged 45–64 have the highest suicide rates in the U.S. (CDC)

  • 69% of men say their identity is tied to their job (APA)

  • Over 50% of men in their 50s and 60s report high levels of work-related stress (NIOSH)

  • Nearly 80% of older workers experience age discrimination (AARP)

  • Depression and anxiety spike for men post-50, especially after job loss (Mayo Clinic)

The Last Ride: 640+ Bike Rides to School with my Kids and Why It Meant Everything

Yeah, I lost it. I kinda thought I might, but as I biked with my son on his last day of elementary school and our last day ever of me biking with him…

The dad emotions hit me hard, which we’ll get to…

By my count we’ve covered about 2,400 miles together these last four years of biking to school… That’s an entire trip across country… 

The first three years I biked with both my son and my daughter, but she’s moved up to middle and bikes with her friends…

It’s the natural progression of parenthood and childhood and I’d be 100% lying if I said every day was great… 

Most were fine… Some were pleasant… Some with tantrums and arguments and kids refusing to slow down or speed up were frustrating as hell…

My daughter went about 3 weeks straight back in 3rd grade with the sole mission of going way too fast for my son (then in 2nd) to keep up on his little bike… Which would leave me playing dad in the middle, yelling ahead to her to slow down and behind to him to relax…

Good times…

But most mornings were ordinary and by that I mean exceptional… The stuff that day-to-day life is made of with little kids that flies by…

We talked about space and insects and state capitols… We discussed the best school lunches and dinosaurs and ice cream flavors… We debated Moana vs. Ariel and Macho Man vs. John Cena… We covered everything…

2nd grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade…

It is the greatest privilege of dad life to be able to spend this uninterrupted time with my kids, just us, biking to school in the sun and fresh air for 25 minutes….

No screens. No distractions. Nobody else…

Then my daughter…


Do Yourself a Favor and Go See Mission: Impossible in a Nice Theater

Kate, Auden, and I went to see Mission: Impossible over Memorial Day weekend—and it was really good.

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a movie in a theater, and this was just fun. What I liked first and foremost was the family time. We hadn’t seen a movie together in a while.

What also stood out to me was the experience. I talk a lot about prioritizing experiences over things, and this was one of those moments. There are places to spend money, and there are places to hold back. This is an area where I’ll spend.

There’s a new theater in town. It’s upscale. The seats are wide and comfortable. There’s a full bar, full menu, and waitstaff. The screen is enormous. Does it cost more? Yes. Is it worth it? 100%. And I’ll pay for that every time.

I want safety. I want security. I want comfort. I want excellence. I want experience. Those things matter to me. And we had a great time—double cheeseburgers and fries in our seats, tray tables in front of us, watching the movie the way it’s meant to be seen: on the big screen.

We also went at 6:15pm. Very midlife of us.

I also really like this thing Tom Cruise does now where he introduces the film. He did this with Top Gun: Maverick when i saw it in the theater.  He comes on screen and tells you how excited he is about the film, how grateful he is that you’re seeing it in the the theater, the way it was meant to be seen and you can feel his passion for his craft. It’s very cool. Very personal.

Watching Tom, in his 60s, do things most guys in their 20s or 30s couldn’t dream of doing is inspiring. Sitting next to my son. Sitting next to my wife. The little things are the big things. This is fun for me.
