The Forgotten Midlife Happiness Metric

By Greg Scheinman
I just got back from a weekend with two of my close friends and business partners.
We paddleboarded.
We worked out on the beach—ocean swims, push-ups, runs.
We ate bacon double cheeseburgers, sushi, four-egg omelets, protein smoothies.
We walked.
We talked.
We rode bikes pretty much everywhere.
We talked about what’s working and what’s not—in our businesses, in our lives. What we’re seeing in the marketplace. What’s changing? What’s staying the same?
These are great guys.
Great husbands.
Great fathers.
Great providers.
They’re in great shape.
Great style.
Great perspective.
They’re the kind of men I want to be around.
The kind of men anybody should want to be around.
They’re fun. They’re aspirational. They live and lead by example and that in turn makes me want to hold the same standard. Not let them down. Not let myself down, and be the weak link.
And it got me thinking:
This kind of experience is at the heart of what Midlife Male is about.
I know this because I’ve never been clearer on what it’s not about:
It’s not about fixing broken men. It’s not about meditating in the woods, or sharing our sad stories with strangers around a fire.
It’s not about taking 80 pills a day or biohacking your way into oblivion.
It’s not about arguing over whether mixing your blueberries with bananas will spike your insulin.
I don’t want to sit in a circle and pass a talking stick around and “get vulnerable”.
I don’t want to major in the minors and live like a science experiment.
None of that sounds like fun to me….
So what do I want?
Well, that’s simple and I alluded to it in my book at the start of the Midlife Male journey:

I want to do cool sh*t with cool people.
I want to stay centered on the things I actually care about:
Family. Fitness. Finance. Food. Fashion. Fun.
I want to be around men who make me happier, healthier, wealthier, stronger.
Men who want to live longer and enjoy the ride.
Men who are accomplished but still curious.
Still learning. Still growing.
Not slowing down, but rather living life at the right rhythm, cadence and speed for them.
That’s where I am.
That’s where many of us are.
Somewhere along the way, we drift. Midlife is the chapter we return, back to what matters, back to ourselves. From here on out, it’s not about having it all. It’s about honoring what’s always been essential and living like it.
Midlife has a funny way of waking you up.
Reminding you that the life you actually want has been waiting for you to remember it.
So that’s what I’m doing now. I’m remembering, reclaiming, and reprioritizing what matters most. And bringing it all back to the front of the line.
That’s what became crystal clear this weekend.
I want to spend my time doing MORE cool things with cool people. And in fact, we’ve got a Midlife Male surprise coming this fall that could include you joining me. I’ll share a teaser at the bottom of this newsletter.
In Health,
Greg
