I read an article in the New York Post this weekend about Josh Duhamel and his so-called “taboo” method for staying youthful and virile. He talks openly about testosterone. About getting older. About wanting to feel good, look good, and perform at his best as a man in midlife.

It struck a chord with me not because it was shocking, but because it wasn’t.

More and more men are going on testosterone. More are finally talking about it. And that’s a good thing because the conversation around men’s health, hormones, and aging is long overdue.

We’re getting married later. Remarried later. Having kids later. We’re living longer, working longer, and trying to stay active the whole way through. If we’re going to do all that (and hopefully do it well) we need to take better care of ourselves. And yes, be able to afford that care, in every sense of the word.

Just this week, Chip Conley republished my andropause article, My Husband’s Gone Andro, in the Modern Elder Academy newsletter. That tells you something. This is no longer fringe. No longer taboo. It’s relevant. It’s personal. It’s real.

Here’s the data:

  • Testosterone levels in men have been declining for decades.
  • A study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found that today’s average 40-year-old has lower T levels than a 40-year-old did in the 1980s—regardless of health or lifestyle.
  • After age 30, men lose about 1% of their testosterone every year. By your 50s, that’s a 20–30% drop.

Andropause is real. Call it what you want, low T, male menopause, hormonal decline, it doesn’t matter. When you lack normal testosterone levels it impacts strength, mood, energy, sleep, sex drive, and focus. You’re not imagining it.

I’m Not Trying to Be Superhuman: Just Fully Human

I started TRT at 49. I wasn’t broken. But I wasn’t thriving, either.

I was still training. Still working. Still showing up for my family. But I was dragging. Recovery took longer. My energy was down. I didn’t feel like myself.

So I got bloodwork. I now work with a functional doctor and use Blokes for my hormone protocol. We test every 90 days. No guessing. We track, adjust, and stay proactive.

It’s been a game-changer because I want to feel fully human again. Clear. Strong. Capable. Resilient.

Let’s be clear: to “supplement” means to add something that enhances or completes. That’s it. It doesn’t mean cheating. It means you saw what was missing and did something about it.

I’m still a basics-over-biohacking guy: sleep, strength, sunlight, and stress management. But I pay attention to what’s new when it’s credible, relatable, and aspirational.

Because the truth is:
You can’t do nothing.
But you also can’t do everything.

The sweet spot? The middle.
And that’s where my mission lies.

I even put together a list of all the midlife tests I think men should get done that we’re going to share soon in a PDF. Not overwhelming. Totally doable. The goal is to make them part of the lifestyle. That’s how we stay on top of this stuff. We maximize midlife by setting standards and sticking to them.

We live in an unnatural world. Artificial light. Processed food. Stress. Screens. Toxins. Sleepless nights. We’re carrying a load that generations before us never had to hold. No wonder we’re depleted.

We’re also bombarded by influencers, celebs, and biohackers jumping into the hormone game. Some of it’s helpful. A lot of it’s not. What worries me most is people with large followings being irresponsible with the information they spread.  When it’s driven by ego, insecurity, or illusion, it does more harm than good.

If you’re going to do it, do it right. With labs. With a plan. With integrity.

Forget about feeling 25 again. The goal is to feel  how you want to feel at 45, 50, 60 and beyond so you can live the way you want to live.

Own your choices. Be transparent. Especially if you’re in the public eye. Taking care of yourself isn’t shameful. But lying about it is.

We’re not chasing immortality here. We’re chasing clarity. Agency. Intention.

And sometimes, it starts with something as simple as a blood test.
